Gone but certainly not forgotten.

Nine years ago I lost my best friend in the worst way. His name was Desmond, and he was a shining light and had a laugh I can still hear in my mind that fills me with warmth (please, never let me forget). He did volunteer work with abused dogs, and after he died I went to where he volunteered and adopted Sooki. It looks like her in the photo... ♥

Desmond McKay I will never forget you or stop missing you. I hate how you left us but I do understand. Thank you for teaching me how to love life and enjoy the little things. I still laugh about the day we got way too stoned and I tried to walk out of the grocery store without paying. They didn't believe that I forgot to pay and I was branded a hoodlum there and never went back. We laughed all the way back to your house with strangers shooting us looks like we were nuts and that just made us laugh even harder. I hope you're laughing still, wherever you are.

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

*deep breath*

So! Good!! Okay so I was only 12 when I first/last saw this and WOW I did not remember it accurately. It is way darker than I recalled and just so damn deeply disturbing. Quentin Tarantino as 'Richie'? I felt like I was dying every time he was onscreen. No character has made my skin crawl that hard since Michael Haneke's Funny Games (1997) and The Devil's Rejects (2005). If you've seen either of those then you know what I'm talking about. I actually didn't realize until this morning that this movie had actually come before those two (interesting). The whole first hour is really painful but then it gets silly-good and turns into more of an action horror. Did NOT like the ending... I would've done that a little differently. (PS: I'd never found George Clooney attractive until this role la purr...)

*Quick question, though: why the hell did they have Cheech Marin playing three separate roles?! It was so confusing! At first I thought it was the same guy but he had two different jobs, but then he showed up as a third person later on and it was like o_O so we watched the end credits and he is indeed listed as three different characters. Bizarre! Bonus: it has a very "young" Danny Trejo! I love that guy but I have a hard time believing he was ever a child *Lol* I imagine him being born with that handlebar moustache and little bottle of booze, somehow already weathered as hell and flipping everyone off. xD

Yesterday I mentioned I'd explain the movie revival thing so here it is: my folks divorced when I was 4 and I went to live with my dad and my brother (we have different dads) went to go live with our mom. I'd go there for weekend visits until about 1999 when I turned 14--and they had the illegal black box for the TV back then! It was the BEST and since I had zero friends when I'd go to my Mom's movies became my sanity saver and I watched everything I could jam into my time there. When I stopped going there I was back to having access to just regular cable (and I ditched that in '05! Suddenly there were so many hours in the day...) so that's why all these movies fit into this neat little ten-year span ('89-'99). I of course kept watching movies past this point but I'd actually have to go rent them (a twenty minute walk...I so miss doing that) so the numbers drop dramatically.
